|
Notice: Immigration rules, required documents, and timelines may change without prior notice. Always verify the latest information with your employer, local Immigration Office, or HiKorea (www.hikorea.go.kr) before visiting. |
|
1) Upon Arrival in Korea
– Keep your passport, visa grant notice, and employment contract handy when you pass immigration control.
– Confirm your accommodation and employer contact. Many schools provide temporary housing for the first few days.
– If housing is not ready, arrange short-term lodging (Airbnb, guesthouse) until your long-term residence is available.
|
|
2) Booking Your Immigration Appointment
– E-2 teachers must register for their Alien Registration Card (ARC) within 90 days of entry.
– Your employer or recruiter can assist in booking through HiKorea.
– Bring your passport, contract, employment verification, medical test results, and visa documents.
– Processing time: normally 3–4 weeks after submission; ARC delivery by mail or in-person pickup.
|
|
3) Health Examination (for ARC application)
– Must be completed after arrival at an authorised hospital designated for foreigner exams.
– You must fast for at least 8 hours before the blood test.
– The test includes checks for narcotics, TB, HIV, hepatitis, and communicable diseases.
– Take at least two sealed copies of your results (ready 1–3 days later). Do not open the envelope.
– Submit the sealed copy to Immigration when applying for your ARC.
If you fail the health test, your visa may be revoked, and employment cannot continue.
|
|
4) Housing & Residence Reporting
– Confirm whether your housing is school-provided or self-rented.
– If you find your own accommodation, file a Change of Residence (거주지 변경신고) within 14 days of moving.
– Required documents: lease contract, landlord ID copy, Accommodation Provision Form, and ARC/passport.
– Coordinate your move-in date and employment start date so your employer can process payroll and insurance correctly.
Important: If your work start date and move-in date differ, you must still submit your own residence report within the 14-day legal deadline.
|
|
5) Internet, SIM Card, and Bank Account
– Internet options: provided Wi-Fi, individual subscription, or mobile tethering. Ask your employer which is preferred.
– Obtaining an ARC and phone plan can take several days; consider buying a prepaid SIM immediately upon arrival.
– Open a Korean bank account for salary and bills. Most schools require a specific bank (e.g. Shinhan, KEB Hana, Woori).
– Bring your passport, visa, and Korean phone number (ARC is needed for permanent accounts; temporary passbooks may be issued first).
|
|
6) Registration with Education Office & Insurance
– Some provincial education offices (교육청) require reporting of foreign teachers; confirm with your employer.
– Enrol in National Health Insurance and Pension within 14 days of ARC issuance. Most employers register on your behalf.
|
|
7) Orientation & Settling-In
– Attend orientation arranged by your school or local education office.
– Topics typically include employment duties, cultural adjustment, and emergency procedures.
– Keep your recruiter and employer informed of any difficulties during your first weeks.
