Changing to an E-2 Visa Inside Korea

체류자격변경허가 for teachers already holding a Korean visa

⚠ DISCLAIMER 면책 공고 ⚠
This is general reference information only. Korean immigration policy and the guidance issued by each consulate and immigration office change without notice
Every procedure rule and document requirement must be confirmed and carried out by the applicant directly through the relevant consulate and through HiKorea or the immigration office
BRIDGE accepts no legal responsibility for decisions made on the basis of this page

01. Who Can Change Status Inside Korea

If you already hold a Korean visa and meet every E-2 requirement you can change status at your local immigration office without leaving the country

D-10 Job SeekerYes. Change inside Korea with no need to leave. You must be staying legally and must have signed a contract with the hiring institution
H-1 Working HolidayYes. Change inside Korea with no need to leave. Teaching is a restricted profession so a working holiday visa alone never covers it. Approval still depends on meeting every E-2 requirement in full
D-2 StudentYes. Apply only once you actually hold the degree and every document is prepared. Do not start looking for a school while the degree or the paperwork is still pending
Do not teach before the change is approved. Working as a language instructor on a student or working holiday visa is unauthorised activity even if the school says it is fine. Get the approval first then start
Your current stay must still be valid on the day you apply. Once your permitted period has passed you are treated as overstaying and a change is refused as a rule

02. Nationality and Degree

Seven CountriesUnited States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand Ireland and South Africa
DegreeBachelor degree or higher from an accredited institution in one of those seven countries. Any major is accepted
Criminal RecordA national level certificate. State or city level checks are not accepted. FBI for the United States ACRO for the United Kingdom RCMP for Canada AFP for Australia and SAPS for South Africa
Both the degree and the criminal record certificate need an apostille. Start looking for work only once that is finished. Applying with incomplete papers wastes everyone time and schools will not hold a position open

03. Health and Fitness

A medical examination including a drug test is compulsory for E visa and F visa holders alike. E visa applicants submit it to immigration and schools require it from F visa holders at hiring. There is no way around it and no exemption
What The Job AsksMost positions mean standing and moving for long stretches speaking for several hours a day and holding the attention of young children in a busy classroom. Read the job description closely and judge honestly whether the daily routine suits you
Child Safety DutyA teacher of young learners is responsible for the physical safety of the class at all times. That means keeping every child in sight and within hearing moving quickly to a child who falls or runs off and reacting on the spot to a choking incident a fight or a fire drill. These are essential duties of the role and not optional extras. Before you apply consider carefully whether you can carry them out. A teacher who cannot respond in time puts a child at risk
If You Could CollapseTell us in advance about any condition that could cause you to collapse or lose consciousness at work. Heart and circulatory conditions epilepsy severe allergies and unstable diabetes all belong here. A teacher who goes down in front of a class of small children leaves nobody to look after them and the children panic. It has happened. If the school knows beforehand they can keep your medication on hand brief a colleague and call for help fast. Telling us does not cost you the job. Staying silent can cost a child their safety and can cost you yours
Tell Us EarlyIf you have a condition that affects how you work tell BRIDGE and the school at the start. Some schools can adjust and some cannot and the answer differs between a kindergarten and an adult class. Raising it early gives you a real choice and lets us look for a suitable placement. Finding out after you arrive helps nobody
DrugsA positive drug result means the visa is refused or cancelled. This applies to cannabis and cannabis products even where they are legal at home. A history of long term drug use can also surface in the screening
Infectious DiseaseUnder the Immigration Control Act entry can be refused where a person carries an infectious disease judged to pose a public health risk. Tuberculosis screening is part of the standard examination
Ongoing TreatmentConditions under treatment such as high blood pressure or depression are not automatic grounds for refusal. What matters is what the examining doctor records and how the case officer reads it. Declare every medicine you take before the test since some can trigger a false positive on the drug screen
Check It YourselfOnly the immigration office can tell you how your own situation will be assessed. If you have any doubt call 1345 or ask your local office before you commit money and time to the process

04. How Long Documents Take

Issuing2 to 10 weeks depending on the country and the agency
ApostilleA further 1 to 4 weeks on top
ShippingDo not use ordinary post to save money. Use expedited courier throughout. A lost certificate costs far more than the postage you saved

05. Applying From Korea or a Third Country

You do not need to fly home. An approved agency can handle the whole chain remotely

Step 1Have ink fingerprints taken at a police station where you live
Step 2Send the card to an approved channeler by international courier
Step 3The agency issues the certificate and completes the apostille in one run
Step 4The finished document is shipped straight to Korea. This cuts weeks off the timeline and removes most filing errors

06. United States Nationals

FBI CertificateApply through an FBI approved channeler or directly with the FBI using digital fingerprints. Choose the expedited option
ApostilleSubmitted to the U.S. Department of State by courier with expedited handling or run through a specialist agency on a fast track
From KoreaThe U.S. Embassy in Seoul offers notarial services by appointment. It does not issue state apostilles or FBI certificates. Those still have to be handled in the United States
One Stop RouteSome agencies take your fingerprints in Korea then run the channeler and the federal apostille together and courier the result back

07. Processing Time

With Papers Ready3 to 7 weeks from filing
What Slows ItSummer and winter holiday periods and public holidays falling on both sides at once. When they overlap the delay can be severe and none of it is within our control
